Josephine Knight: What makes you feel good about yourself?

Josephine Knight is one of the most accomplished and influential cellists of our time. Her ability to perform and express the powerful notes through her bow and strings of her cello have gained her two decades of stellar critics acclamations with her performances and undertaking of music often remarked as ‘positively gladiatorial’ and ‘euphoric in perfection, flavour and expression’.

Josephine’s cello, a 1728 instrument by the Bolognese luthier Joannes Florenus Guidantus, is a symbiotic part of her and it is clear, as her hands take their position and her body draws near the lower bout, that there is an act of ‘completeness’ taking place. For Josephine, the love-affair with the cello began at a young age but excelling at becoming a world-recognised and respected artist requires more than love. When asked what makes her feel good about herself, Josephine’s answer left no doubt: Music. The need to express music through those notes is as compulsive as the need to take in every breath of air into the lungs. Music is to be.
