From Roots…

The ‘Queen of Peckham’ gown

For the finale of the Peckham Style Show, I wanted to design a gown which intertwined my experience of life, history and community in Peckham. I wanted to explore the theme ‘from roots’; how roots find growth and energy from water and new soil, how they hold the ground together and bear amazing fruits for the future. Peckham is a cherished place for me; it provided my first home when I first came to live in London and my first memories of experiencing life, struggles and successes with my own capabilities. Most of my adult life has been linked to Peckham and South East London.

With the design of this gown, I wanted to tell a story of Peckham past , its present and its rich assets for the future, as well as recalling historical facts and the geography of Peckham area. Constructed on a princess line style, I combined jeans fabric with the traditional African Ankara wax cotton, creating tree-like panels with deep roots spreading through silvery-blue silk. Peckham has an underground river that flows through it surfacing in parts of Peckham Rye Park. This is the River Peck, made nationally famous by Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses as the ‘Peckham Spring’. Peckham Rye Park is also the place where William Blake had its first vision: a vision of angels in a tree. All fabrics and components of this gown were sourced from Peckham.

Personally, I truly enjoyed designing this gown. It is a symbolic allegory of the richness that cultural diversity brings to the community.

Thanks to Evelyn who was my Queen of Peckham and majestically displayed my creation!

March 2020: Cadoris first official photoshoot

Lassco Brunswick House was the perfect venue for my photoshoot. I have been dreaming of holding there my catwalk there ever since the first time I set my foot into this amazing world of past treasures; that was ten years ago. I could truly spend a year in there looking at every detail of their artefacts. Everything tells of an era when objects were made for some other motives than money… when skill and craftsmanship were esteemed and each work was a display of professional pride.

The most special thing about the photoshoot was that it was the fruit of the coming together of many talented women that I have met in my life. Women that juggles many roles in their lives and mostly interwoven with the most challenging and rewarding: motherhood.

With special thanks to:

The most welcoming hosts: Jo and Ferrous at Lassco Brunswick House. The beautiful models: Bryony Williamson and Zsanett Kukucska. The lovely headmasters: Hair by Stacey Hickey and make-up by Louise Heywood. The soulful photography by Thea Courtney and artistic keen eye direction by Frances Myers.
